Uncovering Opportunities, Protecting Profits: Electric Advisors' Success Story with a Washington, D.C. Restaurant Group

June 22, 2023

How Electric Advisors saved one DC area business over half a million dollars

Electric Advisors partnered with a Washington, D.C. restaurant group in September 2022, offering a customized energy strategy for their nine restaurants. Market conditions suggested focusing on natural gas pricing and delaying the search for electricity by 6-8 months. Based on Electric Advisors' work, the client signed a natural gas contract at a rate 31% below the market rate, resulting in $72,500 in annual savings across their portfolio.

During a utility bill audit for the same client, Electric Advisors discovered a fraudulent supply contract for some of the client’s units, promptly assisting the client in rectifying the situation and obtaining an $80,000 refund. Over the 3-year contract, the total estimated savings for the group amounts to $280,214.

Ahead of a 66% price increase by Pepco, Electric Advisors revisited the electricity pricing for the client's Washington, D.C. locations. The resulting contracts were 35% lower than the utility's upcoming rates, projected to save the client $167,740 in the first year alone.

Considering current utility pricing, the overall estimated savings for the client on natural gas and electricity costs throughout their contracts are expected to exceed $527,000. Electric Advisors also provided guidance on utilizing local utility tax laws, leading to an additional annual saving of about $10,000. In total, the estimated savings facilitated by Electric Advisors amount to approximately $575,420 by the end of the 3-year contract terms.

As businesses continue their budgeting process throughout 2025, electricity supply costs across the PJM Interconnection region are rising, driven largely by an increase in capacity charges. Capacity charges, which ensure enough power is available during peak demand, have seen a sharp uptick, leading to higher rates, especially in the DC and Maryland energy markets. Both residential and commercial customers are facing these increases, with supply prices potentially rising by as much as 20%, significantly impacting operational costs across Montgomery County, Prince George's County, Baltimore County, Ann Arundel County and towns all across the east coast. However, there is still time to mitigate the coming increase in supply rates. From simple energy efficiency upgrades, such as LED lighting or smart thermostats, to longer-term projects like solar panel installations and power walls, businesses have a range of commercial energy solutions to reduce consumption and control costs. These procurement strategies can offer significant business energy savings over time and position companies for more sustainable energy use. We encourage you to talk with business owners and decision-makers in your network about these rising costs. This is a great time to introduce them to Electric Advisors , where we can help them navigate these changes and find ways to reduce their energy expenses. Your referrals can play a crucial role in helping those in your network become more competitive and we've made a profound impact on local businesses up and down the east coast and beyond.
