Maryland's home-efficiency rebates program begins

Feb 05, 2011

The state of Maryland is stepping in to help residents upgrade their homes with energy-efficient materials and products.

The Maryland Energy Administration (MEA) is pitching in $100 towards the cost of a home-energy audit, and is also rebating a decent chunk of change towards specific improvements.

The rebates are for 35% of the total cost of the improvement. The MEA is rebating up to $1,500 total for each category, which are:

  • Whole-house air sealing

  • Attic insulation

  • Duct sealing, replacement or insulation

  • Wall insulation

  • Crawl-space or basement insulation

  • Rim-joist insulation

Combining the maximum dollar rebate amount of these categories with the $100 rebate on the audit, and Marylanders can save as much as $3100 towards improving their home-energy efficiency. You can hire a home-energy auditor to tell you what you need to do, and then a home-performance contractor to complete the upgrades.

For those who cannot immediately afford the upgrades, the MEA and the Maryland Clean Energy Center are offering unsecured home energy-improvement loans for up to $20,000 at 6.99% interest.

Combine all of these efficiency-related savings with our lower rates for residential electricity and natural-gas supplies, and you can really put a dent in your future home-energy costs.

Electric Advisors is in the process of forming relationships with energy auditors and contractors who can help you with this type of work, and with qualifying for the rebates.

While we'll post our new partners as they become available, please feel free to contact us if you have any questions, or need an immediate referral.
